About Project
Fire Engineering Solutions (FES) was selected by Lendlease and RMS to undertake remedial and upgrade works for various fire systems in the Tugun Tunnel, which serves as an overpass for the extension of the runway for the Gold Coast Airport. The tunnel consists of twin carriageways, each approximately 330 meters in length, with a fire-rated dividing wall separating the northbound and southbound lanes. The rectangular cross-section of each tube accommodates two lanes of traffic in each direction.
The scope of work assigned to FES encompassed several aspects related to the fire protection systems within the tunnel. The following tasks were undertaken:
- Fire System Alterations: FES conducted alterations to the fire pump house, fire tanks, infill pipeline, fire hydrants, and deluge valves. These modifications were necessary to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
- Upgrades in Fire Alarm and SCADA Systems: FES implemented necessary upgrades in the fire alarm and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. These enhancements aimed to enhance the overall efficiency, monitoring, and control of the fire protection systems within the tunnel.
- Non-Compliance Issue Resolution: The primary objective of the project was to identify and rectify any non-compliance issues associated with the fire systems. FES diligently addressed these concerns, ensuring that the fire protection measures met the required standards.
- Five-Yearly Service: FES completed comprehensive five-yearly services for the entire fire water and alarm system. These periodic services involved thorough inspections, testing, maintenance, and any necessary repairs or replacements to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of the fire protection system.
In addition to the remedial and upgrade works, FES conducted an advanced risk study to assess the impact of fireproofing measures on the life safety of the tunnel’s passengers. This study aimed to enhance the overall fire safety measures within the tunnel, considering various scenarios and implementing measures to mitigate potential risks.
The project was successfully completed in 2020, thanks to the expertise and dedication of the FES team. Their efforts in identifying and addressing non-compliance issues, performing necessary alterations and upgrades, and conducting comprehensive servicing and risk assessment have significantly improved the fire safety infrastructure of the Tugun Tunnel.
The appointment of FES by Lendlease and RMS for this project demonstrates their reputation as a trusted provider of fire engineering solutions. Their commitment to delivering high-quality services, adherence to regulations and standards, and proactive approach to fire safety contribute to the overall safety and well-being of the tunnel’s users.
